The
church we see today is thought to be the fifth church to occupy
this quiet and hallowed spot, where prayer, worship and music
have offered up for more than one thousand years.
The maintenance of a large and ancient building is a
big responsibility. Members of the congregation have worked
hard and given generously, but the church is here for the
whole community. You may not necessarily wish to attend
chuch every Sunday, but stil want the church to be there,
to be preserved, improved and passed on to the next generation.
If so you may wish to consider joining the Friends of All
Saints and help to preserve this beautiful building.
Life membership is currently £50, or a greater
donation if you wish.
Annual membership is a minimum of £5.00.
Every penny you give will be used for the objects as
stated above. We will also keep you informed of the verious
events that happen each year in support of the Friends.
If you are a UK tax payer, you can increase the value of
your gift considerably at no cost to yourself by signing
a Gift Aid declaration.
Both of these
forms can be found in the church or from the Secretary:
Janet Coopey

Celebration of the 750th
Anniversary of the Re- Consecration of All Saints Parish Church.
The Medieval-style family party was good
fun.

The main planned church family event was a
medieval style party, which was held on Saturday 16th
July at Northwood Farm. It was great fun, with a lovely
atmosphere. Lots of tasty, varied food was donated on a Bring
and Share basis, with ample supplies of wines, beers, cider and
soft drinks available and sold at very reasonable prices. Those
who came and joined in the celebration had a good time, but
where were you all? We had archery experts encouraging us to
have a go, skittles, a fun Splat the Rat game for all ages, and
a chance to explore heraldry and make up your own personal coat
of arms on a shield. Local businesses readily donated prizes
to our Grand Draw, most generously, and we appreciated their
responses very much. They included the National Trust at Castle
Drogo, Dartmoor Railway, The Co-operative, Martins Butchers,
Rajpoot Indian Restaurant, Quinns Hairdressing, and Beanfeast.
The weather was a bit doubtful in the
morning, but fortunately the afternoon became dry with sunny
periods, as forecast, which enabled the organisers to set
everything up for a great occasion, with contingency plans
should it rain again. Sadly, the organisers were the only
ones to dress up in medieval costume, but most disappointingly,
only 40 additional people turned up to join the organisers.
We all had a good time, however you really missed enjoying a
special afternoon, which the Rector was hoping would be a big
free-access party event for everyone! My grateful
thanks to everyone involved who worked hard in many ways to make
the medieval style party happen smoothly and successfully, and
even our prayers were answered for improved weather during the
event.

WINE AND CHEESE EVENING
WITH MAJESTIC WINES
Wine lovers of
Okehampton were challenged again on their knowledge of a
variety of quality wines by
Majestic Wines of Exeter on Friday 20th May
2011 in the Church Hall, when The Friends of All Saints
Parish Church presented a Wine and Cheese evening, with
a difference!Majestic Wines brought a wide range of
wines, from sparkling, whites and on to fuller reds, to
give everyone a generous blind tasting of the wines.
Then the three wine experts each gave different
explanations as to what the wine was and what region it
was from. Of course, two descriptions were bluff
and only one was correct, leaving the seven teams to
have to work out who was telling the truth! All of the
explanations of the wines were very convincing indeed,
which led to a lot of wine quaffing and opinions being
loudly made as the evening progressed. |

A lovely
plentiful range of cheeses from Taw Valley Creamery was donated
by Robert, a good supporter of The Friends, all accompanied by
French bread, biscuits and grapes.
Everyone
agreed that it was a most enjoyable, interesting and fun evening
in good company, and the winning team did very well being
awarded a top prize of a magnum bottle of Coteaux d'Aix en
Provence Rose wine.
The
proceeds of the evening after expenses were approximately £250.
This helped
to boost The Friends' funds, which are raised on social events
like this in aid of maintaining and preserving the fabric of our
lovely church, All Saints. Thank you to everyone who came and
supported us, making it all worthwhile and certainly enjoyable.
