The church we see today is thought to be the fifth church to occupy this quiet and hallowed spot, where prayer, worship and music have offered up for more than one thousand years.

The maintenance of a large and ancient building is a big responsibility. Members of the congregation have worked hard and given generously, but the church is here for the whole community. You may not necessarily wish to attend chuch every Sunday, but stil want the church to be there, to be preserved, improved and passed on to the next generation. If so you may wish to consider joining the Friends of All Saints and help to preserve this beautiful building.

Life membership is currently £50, or a greater donation if you wish.

Annual membership is a minimum of £5.00.

Every penny you give will be used for the objects as stated above. We will also keep you informed of the verious events that happen each year in support of the Friends. If you are a UK tax payer, you can increase the value of your gift considerably at no cost to yourself by signing a Gift Aid declaration.

The Friends of All Saints Annual Summer Barbecue 2010

Our annual barbecue was held as planned on the 17th July at Northwood Farm, and fortunately the sunny summer weather returned again to make the event a success. About 65 people attended, keeping Jim and George busy cooking chicken, burgers and sausages, whilst the committee ladies served, with salads and bread, followed by the eagerly awaited delicious desserts. Chilled white and rose wines and lager as well as red wines and soft drinks were available and welcomed in the warm sunshine. It was a lovely sociable afternoon, enjoyed by everyone, including the children playing croquet. We were again most grateful to Ben for hosting the event on his farm, and an early estimate shows that about £400 was raised for All Saints church funds.

Well done and thanks to everyone who contributed in any way, not least those who supported The Friends, to make it an enjoyable and worthwhile event.

All Saints Church Stained Glass Window Renovation

refurbished stained glass

Following the recent quinquennial inspection of the external protective wire screens of all the church windows, it was found that the south facing chancel window (dated 1854) was in need of urgent attention before it suffered a catastrophic loss.

This window, seen on the right hand side of the altar, would require a complete removal for re-leading, and the services and advice of Andrew Johnson, a master glazier with experience of similar work for Exeter cathedral was duly sought. The cost of all the work was quoted at a best lowest figure of £2829.

The Friends committee considered the funds and options available to meet this urgent need, and with the guidance of the Revd. Stephen Cook, Robin Townshend from The Friends committee volunteered to explore applying for grants from The United Charities, with any shortfall being met by funds held by The Friends. It was stressed that the windows were of Heritage value to the community at large, and he successfully managed to achieve grants from The United Charities and The Barbara Whatmore Trust, totalling £2300.  The outstanding sum of £529 was met from The Friends funds.

The work on the window has now been completed, and the result is splendid. This project is a typical example of what The Friends raise funds for, and it is good to be able to react promptly to save a valuable part of the church in good time.

Dear Friend

ANNUAL NEWS LETTER: March 2010

1.Notice and invitation to the AGM to be held at All Saints Parish Church on Sunday18th.April 2010 at 4:30pm followed by a complimentary tea then evensong at 6:30pm All are welcome.
    2.Agenda for the AGM
3.Social Events Card. (enclosed with hard copies)

GENERAL COMMENT: We have had one of our most successful years both financially and socially under a  mainly new younger committee with renewed vigour and enthusiasm under our Vice Chairman George Ware who volunteered at the beginning of the year to be our Press and Publicity Officer with great effect. The Friends felt we should have a higher profile both within the church itself and with the media. We have placed a notice board on the first pillar entering the church with notice of forthcoming events and reports with colour photos of  concerts and activities. Reports and colour photos have been well documented in the local Okehampton Times especially of our Burn”s night party and Two Moors Festival. The church”s Website is now kept updated so that the general public at large , here or overseas is able to “log on”.

We have been endeavouring to follow up our Chairman”s report of last year when it was stressed that the care of our building bears witness to what we believe and pointed out the wonderful developments since the re-ordering of the church and allowing the increasing use of the building for musical and choral events. All Saints provides a service to the community for Okehampton and District -Christian and Non-Christian alike. We are the hub of the Northmoor Churches (See Web Site) serving 10 other churches and whilst a church building has been on the same site for 12 Centuries is more than a building and is the heart of a Christian people in the 21st.Century where regularly every Sunday up to 100 people receive holy communion.

FUND RAISING AND SOCIAL EVENTS:2009/10 .Our first event was a Summer Party wisely chosen for the end of May in the gardens and on the tennis court at Greenwoods where about 100 people enjoyed one of the most beautiful days of the year. The azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, laburnums, brooms and flowering plants were at their best with champagne strawberries and cream. “A day to remember” and for posterity I record our thanks to Andrew Bourne who captured the joys of the day and gave each committee member a disc of the event. Over £650 was raised.

A summer BBQ in July at Northwood Farm by kind invitation of Mr.Ben Lippiatt and Family was a popular venue where over 60 people attended. The sun umbrella protected the food from a slight moorland drizzle which cleared up and failed to  dampen  the enthusiasm of George and Jim cooking sausages, chicken legs and hamburgers. £435 was raised.

Mid September saw the Massai Warriors of Kenya performing where tickets for 200 sold out before the event and funds donated in aid of their funds in Africa.

Two exciting days in October for the Two Moors Festival where 3 concerts per day kept The Friends busy providing refreshments through out the day on a rota. The two morning and afternoon musical and singing events attracted about 60 to each and the evening performances were well supported with upto 140 people at each and a full 3 course supper provided for about 60. with a wine bar.  A very high standard of young soloists and musicians from all over the world from Mexico and Peru to Aberdeen and London. Some already performing with orchestras in Vienna,Rome and New York Etc.Thanks to Penney Aidie MBE and her husband John who provide workshops at the Okehampton College and at their farm on Exmoor. They are also celebrating their 10th. Anniversary with a garden at the Chelsea Flower Show.25th.-29th.May 2010.  We raised £1200 for the Church.

In December we hosted the Moor Harmony Singers from Belstone.

Burns Night Party in January 2010 proved a popular event in the church hall attracting 70 souls who saw a piper addressing a haggis(sponsored by Waitrose)£650 was raised with poems, supper, songs and dancing.

PROJECTS: A notice board kindly donated by Mr.Stan Callaghan

Repairs to the stained glass Southfacing Chancel window (dated 1854) costing £2829 thanks to the support of the Friends and the committee(Robin Towshend in particular) in obtaining part funding from various sources (see Treasurers Report) thus saving our funds.

Donations to the PCC which were felt within our remit to assist the Church Wardens.

Our Chairman has asked us to build up a fund to assist in staging, lighting and toilet facilities.

The committee has two Pillar Banners under consideration with free tuition fees to assist a team of volunteers.

FUTURE EVENTS: See enclosed Social Events card. Two Moors Festival 2010 at All Saints this year will be on a single day Monday 4th.October

On behalf of the Friends and myself we look forward to seeing more of you. Application forms for joining are obtainable from myself. Annual fee £5 or more, Life membership £50.

Yours sincerely

David G.Vick (Hon. Sec.)

Cheese and Wine Evening

Wine lovers of Okehampton were challenged on their knowledge of a variety of quality wines by Majestic Wines of Exeter on Friday 14th May, when The Friends of All Saints Parish Church presented a Wine and Cheese evening, with a difference!
Bruce, Paul and Ian from Majestic Wines brought a wide range of wines, from sparkling, whites and on to fuller reds.  Everyone sat around candlelit tables as teams, and were each given a good tasting of one wine at a time, blind, and then were given three explanations as to what the wine was and what region it was from.  Of course, two descriptions are bluffs and one is correct, and the teams had to work out who was telling the truth.  All of the explanations of the wines were very convincing indeed, which led to a lot of wine quaffing and opinions being loudly made as the evening progressed.
In case anyone was still feeling thirsty, choice red and white wines were on sale during the evening, and soft drinks were also available.
A lovely plentiful range of cheeses was supplied by Taw Valley Creamery in North Tawton, who donated the cheddar cheese, and the remainder of the cheeses were very kindly contributed by Robert, a good supporter of The Friends of All Saints church, all accompanied by french bread and biscuits.
The winning team won a large bottle of excellent Rioja Reserva wine, and the team with the least correct answers a dozen Doom Bar beers. Orders for wine were taken on the night, and Majestic Wines have generously offered to donate a percentage of the sales to The Friends funds, which are raised on social events like this in aid of maintaining and preserving the fabric of our lovely church, All Saints.
Everyone really enjoyed the very successful evening, and the amount raised so far, not including a donation from Majestic Wines, was £320.

Burns' Night Supper Party

The Friends of All Saints Parish Church in Okehampton held a very successful Burns’ Night Supper Party event on Saturday 23rd January, to provide an opportunity for people to enjoy a traditional Scottish evening, as well as raising funds for the church.

There were the traditional elements of Addressing the Haggis, followed by the humorous Toast to the Lassies and the Response to the Toast speeches, containing many references to Robbie Burns, with suitable witty comments!

Andy Buchanan, a piper in full highland regalia, provided the music, together with Jean who led the singing and dancing after the plentiful Scottish fayre of haggis, tatties and neeps, followed by delicious Athol Brose and fruit crumble desserts.

Waitrose magnificently contributed all of the Macsween haggis (including vegetarian) for the evening, which was much enjoyed and greatly appreciated.

The tables were all decorated wonderfully, and with 70 people attending and having made an effort to wear something tartan, the atmosphere was fantastic with everyone enjoying a great time.

The Friends Burns Night Supper Party event raised about £650 for funds designated to maintaining the fabric of the Parish Church, and I would like to  take the opportunity to thank everyone who contributed in any way to make the evening so successful, enjoyable and memorable.

All Saints Carols by Candlelight  Service

Over 200 people attended the candle lit service of lessons and carols at All Saints Parish Church on Sunday 20th December, with some hearty singing of well known carols, most ably supported by the Senior and Junior Choirs.
The church was beautifully decorated and looked magical and spectacular and indeed was full, in spite of the fall of snow just before the service which added to the atmosphere, so completing the evening with warmed mulled wine and mince pies supplied and served by the Friends Committee of All Saints Parish Church was most welcomed by everyone.
Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year.

Vice-chairman of The Friends

All Saints Church Hosts The Two Moors Festival Visit to Okehampton

The Friends of All Saints Church annually host the visit of The Two Moors Festival, and each year it seems to get better. This year was no exception, we had a terrific time.  The Friends and the Rector, the Rev. Stephen Cook particularly welcome the event, which makes further good use of the lovely church and encourages people in addition to the regular congregation to come and enjoy musical social gatherings.

The Friends Committee with helpers were delighted to provide refreshments, suppers and wine to the many visitors and performers, for a total of six concerts over the two days. The money taken contributes to the funds which The Friends endeavour to raise in its remit to improve and preserve the fabric of the church.

The range of musical content and style was, as always with this Festival, very wide indeed. We were treated to exciting Brazilian guitars, classical piano trio, unusual jazz trio, a lively lecture recital on Chopin, a taste of India with dances, and finally a fantastic programme of excerpts from popular opera works. However, all the concerts shared one thing; the sheer enthusiasm and first class musicianship and professionalism of all the performers.  The magnificent piano which played an important part in three of the concerts, and is especially transported to venues as required, was the familiar Bosendorfer Imperial Concert Grand piano, valued at around £100,000!  You can’t get better than that!

We in turn served our visitors with a wonderful range of delicious refreshments and suppers, and not least many glasses of selected red and white wines. We received many complimentary comments on how enjoyable people feel about coming to concerts at All Saints Church, and indeed the church was practically full throughout all the concerts.  The performers particularly appreciate the wonderful acoustics and sense of occasion within the church.

The highlight of the concerts was for so many the last night, fittingly called “Opera to Die For…”

It was indeed a fabulous night with superb singing, amusing and emotional music from a lovely range of opera composers.  The female soloists looked stunning, and indeed all were outstanding and obviously really enjoying themselves, and were delightful to meet with and talk to after the concert. Even those present who were not particularly opera fans thought it was fantastic. Wow!! We look forward to next year’s visit knowing that we will have a wonderful time.
